Georgetown University: Value of Renters Insurance for Students

For Tony Kollath, Automation Analyst at Georgetown University, the value of partnering with GradGuard is straightforward. "The GradGuard Renters Insurance Program allows us to offer the students and their families peace of mind," he says.

Before GradGuard, Georgetown didn't have anything to offer at an institutional level — even though the university's risk department consistently asked students one key question: "Do you have renter's insurance?" Without coverage, the university's liability is limited, leaving students and their families potentially on the hook financially when something goes wrong.

Implementation was about as smooth as it gets. Georgetown had been a StarRez client for about eight years, and integrating the GradGuard Renters Insurance Program into the StarRez portal was a very easy process. It has taken zero maintenance — the same page is reused over and over, attached directly to the housing application students already fill out. Kollath appreciates being able to offer students an option that covers them in case anything happens in their room during the academic year that would require financial reimbursement.

Kollath also has a personal perspective on the program. His daughter was a first-year college student this past academic year at a school that also uses StarRez. While helping her through the housing application process, he discovered that her university also offers GradGuard. As a parent, he says, it was an absolute no-brainer decision.
