Seamless and Straightforward Renters Protection at UC Davis
UC Davis, GradGuard, and StarRez work together to provide a seamless, integrated solution benefiting students.
The University of California, Davis was an early adopter of GradGuard’s Renters Protection Program, becoming a partner in 2014.
Over the next decade, the program has greatly evolved. The heart of the program has remained constant: a prioritization on financial literacy and collecting refund policy acknowledgement from students. The partnership ensures all students understand the importance of protection and have an affordable option for coverage through GradGuard.
GradGuard’s Renters Protection Program integrates within StarRez, presenting a seamless offer for students to purchase a policy within the housing portal or provide proof of coverage.

At UC Davis, students have the option to sign up for GradGuard, or to decline the offer and present their own proof of coverage.
“Having it integrated in the housing application, makes it really easy for the students,” said Sarah Greenhalgh, Residential Systems Manager at UC Davis. “They’re thinking of where they’re going to be living and filling that out, it just fits together nicely.”
UC Davis students understand the importance of renters insurance as the campus sees 58% of their students enroll in GradGuard’s program and works toward a goal of 100% policy acknowledgment.
A student was smoking in her apartment bathroom when it caught fire, totaling $30,000 in damage and displacing several residents.
Faye Perata, Director of Residential Operations, recalls this incident that caused a great deal of damage and was happy the student had opted in to GradGuard’s renters protection as it helped to cover the loss.
“She wouldn’t have been able to afford that if she didn’t have the coverage,” Perata said. “We’ve had a couple of those situations.”

By partnering with GradGuard and leveraging the integration capabilities of StarRez, UC Davis successfully implemented a renters insurance program that prioritized student protection and convenience.
