As colleges and universities face growing pressure to manage risk, protect institutional resources, and better prepare students for the responsibilities of living independently, renters insurance requirements are emerging as an important practice within campus housing. Rather than simply encouraging students to consider coverage, institutions are increasingly exploring approaches that establish clear insurance expectations and provide a consistent process for students to demonstrate that they are protected.
This session examines the University of South Carolina’s approach to renters insurance as an example of how institutions can incorporate these expectations into the student housing experience. Presenters will discuss the rationale behind establishing a renters insurance requirement, including the role it can play in protecting students from unexpected financial losses, reducing pressure on institutional budgets following property losses or other incidents, and helping students better understand personal property and liability risks.
